Challenge to Everett's petitions headed to court

TROY - Council President Rodney Wiltshire is challenging the petitions of mayoral hopeful Earnest Everett in court.
Three candidates turned in more than the required 402 signatures to get on the ballot – Wiltshire, Everett and Patrick Madden.
Wiltshire turned in the most signatures with 1,261, Madden, who is not enrolled in any party but is the Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate filed 1,107 while Everett filed 855.
But, Russell Ziemba, a Democrat and former Council candidate filed specific objections to 508 of Everett’s signatures based on the belief they from people not enrolled in any party, enrolled in a party other than Democratic or enrolled as a Democrat but living outside of Troy. The case is expected to be in court next week.
The first step in the scrutiny of the signatures are by the commissioners at the Board of Elections – Democrat Ed McDonough and Republican Larry Bugbee. While Bugbee bounced many of the signatures McDonough ruled they were valid so now a judge will determine if each of Ziemba’s specific objections are valid.
"It's disrespectful to me and my team and it's disrespectful to the people supporting me," Everett told the Times Union.
Everett did draw the first ballot position in the primary should his withstand the challenge to his petitions. Wiltshire will appear second and Madden third.
While the objections are technically filed by Ziemba, it comes from the Wiltshire camp. It’s widely believed Everett will syphon votes from Wiltshire should there be a three-way primary. Both Wiltshire and Everett are black, for starters, and they are both running against the established Democratic Party.

  1. Rodney became black only when he ran for office. Phony

  2. Wiltshire can't have it both ways. He claims to be running against a political machine but it's his team that's the one using nasty political tactics to deny voters a choice in the mayoral primary.

  3. Interesting that Bugbee ruled in favor of Wiltshire considering that Ziemba went and consulted with Bugbee before filing his his objections...Seems pretty clear Wiltshire will sleep with anyone to get elected.

  4. What's so wrong with letting Ernest be on the ballot? Is Rodney that afraid of his (lack of) support? Notice the real Dems didn't object....let the voters decide.

  5. Rodney should be running scared....he hasn't a chance against Madden. Rod's showing his true color and desperation by going after Everett - the real black candidate in the race.

  8. Glad to see Mr. Franco writes the truth about where objections to Everett are coming from. Despite denials in Record by rookie reporter, Wiltshire is the decision maker on whether Everett is challenged. Both Wiltshire and his campaign manager deny involvement in this destructive move yet anyone can see through their lies. It's one more example of lies and deception by this councilman who thinks he can fool the voters.

  9. To quote Tom Wade on your show: "I am not afraid of primaries. I have always felt that as long as the law provides for primaries. As long as you comply with the regulations i.e. getting enough signatures then you know let the voters decide."

Except when the insurgent not complying with the law is actually helpful to his personal vendetta against Wiltshire. Then by all means accept all of the fraudulent signatures you can.

Why would the Democratic Commissioner be so unconcerned with non-Democrats nominating people to the line?

First the Democrats nominate a non-Democrat. Then the non-Democrats nominate a new Democrat. All for fear of a life long Democrat with strong democratic principles getting in and putting a stop to their anti-democratic control.

    1. The only one with a personal agenda is Rodney. It's all about furthering his future not Troy's. Never mind about telling the truth or letting the voters decide in a primary...stop spreading your lies, Rodney!

  12. If Mr. Everett's signatures are indeed valid, that is fine. He should be in the race. If they are illegal, then they should be tossed as he should also for knowingly submitting illegal ballots. Didn't we all learn something a few years ago?
What is interesting is who is behind the signature challenge for his own self benefit. The same guy who was absent two years in a row when it came to voting on the budget, because he was on vacation.

  16. Ernest is a fraud, who committed fraud, and is supported by the same clown posse of Dems, led by the Rensco BOE Commissioner who was involved with the last fraud case.
He'll be kicked off the ballot because real dems don't want their line hijacked by liars and fools.

  20. If Mr. Wiltshire was not behind the challenge to Mr. Everett's petitions, then why was he in court to be there for the decision from the judge ? Looks like the Dem. Primary will have three candidates. Mr. Wade must like that.
